Ah, deadlines, and indulgences!

It’s nose-to-the-grindstone time again. I’m feverishly working on KISS of the KNIGHT, and then some. Research is a bear. But a very interesting one. I spent days, not hours researching the pre 1066 England nobility pecking order. I finally had to throw the question out to a historical loop I’m on, and while I did get info, it was info I already had but wasn’t positive about. The nice soul who responded validated, with sources, what I knew. So I’ll run with what will be a minor detail in the story, but I want it correct.

Some of you are scratching your head and asking, “Why didn’t you go to the loop first?”
My answer is: if I don’t do my homework first, it feels like I’m asking someone to do the work for me.

That said, if there is anyone out there who is an expert on 1066 England, raise your hand! I would love a go-to person.

Other than that, I am still working on finding an editor for my next First Line Contest. Doing all of the stuff required of the mother of the bride, and all of the other life stuff.

Last night was a welcome respite. Number two daughter, my mother-in-law, aunt, and I went shopping and then had a fabo dinner at a downtown restaurant. Lol my mil was all ewey about sitting outside, (she hates flies, so do I) but the weather and scenery were too perfect not to. I had the most delicious pomegranate Cosmo on the planet. The food was really good the service better, and well, it was one of those evenings where everything was perfect. I didn’t realize until we were laughing and chatting just how much I needed a night like that out. And the company aside, I outdid myself at the mall.

I’m not a big shopper, but I found the coolest black suede slouch boots at Steve Madden. A shirt at Bebe that actually fit me! Another two shirts at Express that fit! And Chico had a great selection of belts. I couldn’t help myself. I bought three. Oh, and pair of slacks.
I almost was very bad at the Coach store. There was this beautiful red leather bag with matching accessories…for the ensemble? A mere $1300 and change. Hmm, maybe next contract…

🙂 Everything I purchased is still sitting in bags at the bottom of the stairway. I have walked past the heap no less then 20 times today. Maybe tomorrow I’ll drag it all up and put it away. And maybe not. I just put one of the suitcases I took to Dallas in the spare room last week. 😉
Sigh, at my core, I’m lazy. But, I have felt very self-indulgent lately. And I have never felt guilt spending money on myself. So long as the household doesn’t suffer.

I know many women feel bad about splurging on themselves. But let’s for the sake of argument here, say we have a fluid income, and we can indulge ourselves however we want.

What would you indulge in?

Poppy, the islands look spectacular. the hubster and I are headed for kauai for two weeks of pure r&r next spring.
I like the car too, but for me, I like the mercedes SL600 roadster. blackof course

Oh, and another one of those scrumptious chocolate cakes of yours.

  2. LaDonna

Fun question, I’d travel…a lot. And I’ve always wanted a beach house, so I’d buy one. I’d set my grandbabies up with college funds. Now this is all if I had a really fluid income. LOL. Hubby and I bought some furniture today and, well, I feel like I indulged. And it felt great!!! I could get used to this feeling.

  3. Poppy

Well, the chocolate cake is doable. Maybe with fudge filling next time.

The Mercedes is lovely, of course, but it’s not 0 to 60 in 4 seconds all-electric lux.

And I want to go to Kauai!

  4. Karin

LaDonna, I like furniture. And a beach house. and grand babies.

Cele, Poppy made me the bestest scratch chocolate cake with chocolate cream cheese frosting ever!

Poppy, you can come to Kauai with us. There is plenty of room where we stay.
and I suppose a green car is better than a black car. 😉 oh, and you are the last person who needs a car that goes 0-60 in 4 secs.

  5. Cele

I’m envious all the way around. Did someone mention chocolate?

  6. spyscribbler

How fluid, LOL? A house would be nice! Or an RV to just move around the country. Other than that, I’d be happy with a day at the movies. I love going to several movies in a day!

  7. Amy S.

Books and traveling. I would love to go to Australia and Hawaii.

  8. B.E. Sanderson

Fluid income? Hmmm. First I’d get a house (with servants for doing all the chores I don’t want to do) on at least 80 acres with its own private lake. I’d fill the house with art from Cordair.com, because Bryan Larsen is awesome. I’d have a barn full of horses – Arabians. A nice car – nothing fancy. And we’d eat food that wasn’t on sale, generic, or otherwise cheap.

Heh. Don’t want much, do I? And here I was thinking I was the only one who felt guilty spending money on myself. I wonder why we women do that.

  9. amie stuart

I’ve already promised myself on the next book deal I”m buying myself a Coach purse. It’s completely indulgent and selfish of me to spend that kind of money on myself but i believe we women sometimes just have to. And besides I’ve earned it.

  10. Amanda

With fluid income I would indulge with all those things I should do for myself now, but I don’t. I would get manicures, massages, and facials. Pamper myself all the time, instead of none of the time. LOL

  11. Karin

Spy, very fluid! But a day at the movies sounds fun. Sometimes it boils down to the little things. There is a movie that comes out this Friday. I think it’s called the last legion. c’mon over and we’ll go.

Amy, I’d love to go down under. My friend Liz spent a couple of months there awhile back. She loved it. and we love the hawaiian islands. and you can come with poppy when we go.
I’d love to go to ireland for a month and the amalfi coast.

  12. Karin

B.E. it sounds good to me! If you’ve got it buy it!
I don’t know why so many women feel guilty about indulgences. I personally never have, 🙂 but I know many women who either do feel guilty or don’t do it. Like Amanda!!!!

Amie, my youngest daughter is a coach freak! My fave is Louis V. I like prada, and chanel too, but I support the home fires and buy coach. but you should have seen that red leather bag. limited edition. and gorgeous!

  13. Karin

Amanda, methinks I will take you out for a day a Day Spaing!

  14. Karin

Hey, Lee? I have your 300 DVD! I’ll get it to you this week.

  15. Liz Kreger

Geez … where to begin? Travel is a gimme, with top accommodations, of course. Shopping would be a huge indulgence for me if I didn’t have to worry about how much I’m spending. Regular trips to a good spa.

How about the intangibles? Sleep, time, and more sleep. I never seem to get enough. LOL

  16. Karin

Sleep? ah, Liz, I get plenty of that. sorry. sometimes too much!

  17. Karin

hey, a little birdie told me Karin has lined up a most stellar editor for the next first line contest. ya’ll have to come back tomorrow for the announcement. )~

  18. Edie

I’m with LaDonna and Liz about travel, with top accommodations. The British Isles, Australia and of course, South Africa, where I’d visit Michelle. LaDonna’s beach house sounds good too. 🙂

I’ll be back tomorrow to hear more about your announcement. 😀

  19. Virna

A personal chef and personal trainer — because I l love food and hate exercise. I’m a great bargain shopper but have a hard time spending money on designer items. I’m too fickle!

  20. Karin

Edie, speaking of isles, i’d love to hit the greek islands.

Virna, you always have cute shoes!

  21. tawny

Oooh, I want Virna’s personal chef and trainer, a standing weekly appt at a day spa, and shopping via a credit card I never have to see the balance of LOL.

I was cruising Steve Madden online today, Karin, cool boots! I’m already drooling over a few I’d love to get… but shoes are contract pressies, so I need the contract first!

  22. Amanda

Ooooh, travel. I want to go to Ireland and research the family tree.

  23. Karin

T, they look purdier in person.

  24. Elisabeth Naughton

Easy. A whole day at the new Saks 10K square foot shoe department in NYC. They had a little snippet about it on the Today show this morning. Heaven has to be filled with shoes. Shoes and hot baseball players. Yeah, that’s it . . .

  25. Karin

Eli, a friend and fellow shoe freak and I were chatting the other day and dicsovered we wear the same size shoe. then we cam up with the idea of co-owning a couple of pair of manolos and jimmy choo’s.

  26. Elisabeth Naughton

Stop, Karin. You’re making me hot with that kind of talk.
