The faster I go

The behinder I get! I so need to get organized. You should see my office. It looks like a damn bomb went off in it. If my fung shui gf Bella saw this mess she’d tell me I was doomed!

Yeah, so I have piles of papers that are going to get mass shredded next week. I have piles of receipts that need to get categorized for my taxes (still haven’t given my tax person my numbers for the extension I filed), I have stacks of books everywhere and boxes of note cards and envelopes, and kitty toys, and file folders, and spiral notebooks.

Argh! It’s encroaching on me. I can barely type, my elbows are pressed to my side because the files are infiltrating my personal space. But if I take the time to clear it all then I won’t be writing, and I need to write write write. The story is flowing flowing flowing.

My inbox is overflowing with emails I need to return, but dayum, I don’t wanna. So if you emailed me and I haven’t responded, don’t be mad at me. I will. I promise.

My house is trashed. Doesn’t matter I have a housekeeper come in once a week. She is now dusting and mopping around piles. This morning is the perfect morning to take my dog for a walk. I’m writing. I’ll do my intermittent dreadmill thing. It’s actually pretty cool. I have a book (currently SEX ON THE BEACH by Jen Apodaca) I can read only when on the dreadmill. Jen’s book is making me want to exercise. Okay, I’ll take my dog for a walk, but I’ll still do the dreadmill coz I wanna read some of Jen’s book.

So that’s my current life, folks. I think by the end of this book, I will be so hunched over from research and writing I will not be able to stand up straight again for some time. I feel like a pretzel. Hmm, maybe I’ll go get a massage. Yeah, I have a gift certificate to one of the day spas here in town. That will be bliss.

Ten bucks says I don’t make the appointment. If I do then I have to leave the house and that means leave the laptop which means leave my characters, and I don’t wanna.

Oh, crap! I think I’m going to change my heroes name!! I have never done this so far into a story. But I think I like the new name better. I’ll try it out as I write today. I think I’m gonna like it.

So how do you handle that? Changing a character’s name half way through a story. Stick with it, or change?

  1. Amanda

I always change the character’s name if the change makes sense. My characters in Dangerous Shift were just moseying along until I changed their names; then they breathed life. 🙂

  2. Karin

as i’m writing this morning i’m trying out the new name. methinks it will stick.

  3. B.E. Sanderson

First off… Geez, girl, I got tired just reading that.

Now, I don’t mind changing a character mid-stream, I just have to make sure I go back and change every instance (or let Word do it, I should say) once I’m finished writing. Otherwise, my brain forgets and parts of the book have one name, while parts of it have the other – depending on where my brain was at that day. I’ve never done it with a major character, but I’ve done with a few minor characters. When my readers got the pages, they kept asking who all those people were. Heh. Next time I’ll catch it before it goes out, I hope.

Good luck, Karin. Now take a few minutes and take your pooch for a walk. The fresh air with do you some good. =oD

  4. Donna Kowalczyk

Hi Karin! And I was just going to email you, too…LOL I’ll give you a few days, nothing important. 🙂

I’ve never changed a character’s name, but I’d do it in a heartbeat if the change made sense.

  5. Karin

B.E. I took my dog for a walk *and* did the dreadmill! If felt good. Now I’m hunched over again.

    Donna email me!!!

  6. Marcia

I had a secondary character who was meant to be a jerk, but he wasn’t jerk enough for me. But when I changed his name to Trojan about 3/4 of the way through, MAN, OH MAN, did I love doing those rewrites!! It even beefed up my heroine’s drive to want him smacked off the face of the earth.

  7. Cele

To me it all makes sense. In numerology you uncover certain character traits through the names numerical breakdown, so why wouldn’t it make sense that to change a character’s name will change the being and traits they are taking on. Makes total sense….er to me..and that isn’t always a selling point to others.

  8. Michelle

Never changed a character’s name that far through, but have changed it in the first 3 chaps or so.

So happy for you that its flowing, just take care of yourself 🙂

  9. Edie

I’m at chapter four and just changed a name (with LaDonna’s help). If the name still bugs you halfway through, it needs to be changed.

Marica, loved the name of Trojan as a jerk character. 😈

Karin, Erica Orloff wrote a couple blogs yesterday about embracing the mess, lol. She was even brave enough to show pictures. She said she realizes when she’s in creating, her mind is messy. I understand completely and will no longer feel guilty about messiness.

  10. Karin

    Love Trojan!!

Cele, someone told me the other day I was a 5. I think, or a four. all I know is it was a boring number.

Michelle you have spoken up sooner. I woke up this morning with a horrible head cold, compliments of my son who has been miserable all week.

  11. Karin

Edie, I can proudly show my office now. I spent all night last night dumping crap!! I’m freeeeeeee, and the at your door shredder guy comes Tuesday to make it all *really* go away.

  12. LaDonna

Karin, my plan is to clean my office space Sunday. I wanna hit revisions hard Monday, and having a clear space might help that along. lol. And yep, I’ve changed a character’s name before. Not too far into the story, but early enough it just clicked without confusion. Love when I get it right the first time, though.

  13. Karin

go for it, LD. i’m sitting here amidst a gleaming desk and i much prefer my space this way.
i decided not to change the characters name to what i wanted. it meant something that was the complete opposite of him. sigh, so keeping the original. for now.
oh, and i expect a health report on the state of your office first thing Monday morning.

  14. Bernita

Have no compunction on changing a character’s name.
Now, if I could just settle on the spelling…

  15. tawny

have you considered taking your laptop to the massage with you? I mean, really -you can lay there on your stomach, typing away as the masseuse unknots your back *beg*

  16. LaDonna

LOL, Karin. I’ll be here Monday morning to report the state of my office. I’m getting ready to “dig” in. Who knows, maybe I’ll be able to widen the space around my laptop. It’s folder to folder, stack to stack now. AUGGGH, I can’t breathe! hehe.

  17. Karin

Bernita, spelling can make a regular name unique.

T, I planned on taking Alphie, does that count?

    Ok, LD. Report!

  18. LaDonna

Karin, happy to report I can breathe again! I have a stack of papers on the floor that are designated for the shredder. (when I have time) Everything is dusted, the windows are open, and hallelu the energy can flow again. Thanks for the inspiration, just like the weight thing. We’ll see Friday how that goes this week. LOL.

  19. Karin

Yay! you get a gold star!!!! isnt’ so much nicer??
