Spring Break?

April 6, 2009 | Karin's Blog | 21 comments

Are the kids home and driving you crazy?  Not me!  For that I am very thankful. It doesn’t mean I won’t be busy.  I’m working hard on book four of the Blood Sword Legacy series, tentatively titled MASTER OF DECEPTION.  While all the hot knights make an appearance, this book, I think, is going to be a bit more tender.  And before you all start screaming, tender doesn’t mean the edge will be softened, but instead, my featured knight, Thorin, finds himself in a situation where not only is he married but actually finds his shy wife enchanting and he woes her.  Of course, all is not as it appears to be on the surface, and he soon suspects his sweet wife is not really so sweet, especially when it comes to invading Normans, and the Viking who always seems to be one step ahead of her. But by then, it will be too late. Muwhahaahahahahaaa.

I’m also having some difficulty putting my story, working title DIE FOR ME, the proposal I sent my agent last week and still hovering around me like one of those kids on spring break, aside.  It wants all of my attention, all of the time. Attention I can’t give it right now.  The characters keep nagging at me to get on with it.  They are impatient and wanting to one up the other.  I LOVE this story and the tension between the h/h.  It’s there, it pops off the page, and if I’m not careful, they’ll take me hostage pretty soon.  I really hit my zone with this one.  Keep your fingers crossed my agent thinks so too!

So, what is everyone working on?  And when you’re writing one of those stories that just clicks in your mind, heart and on paper, what do you do when you really need to focus on other things?

Oh, and don’t forget Rescue Me starts back up tomorrow night.  22 episodes this season!  Whoo hoo, can’t wait!

  1. LaDonna

Hey Karin, man I can’t read Thorin’s story! Sounds like a winner. And we’re having two of our grandkids and daughter over for a 2 day sleepover tonight. SIL is away on business.

The WIP has been a delight and challenge. I’m having to work for every inch, but also know I’m raising the bar. It’s the next story, like yours, that’s calling me to hurry up already!

Your second question is tough. If I’m writing a story that demands everything, I give it a go. Life gets hectic and things slide, and the only thing that takes priority is family. 🙂

  2. Brandy W

Ummmm….my kids are on Spring Break this week. I am reading a lot though.

  3. Edie

Karin, I love both your titles! Everything crossed that your agent loves Die for Me.

I’m finally writing my wip after going through two deep revisions of the first half. I wrote part of a sex scene this morning and had to stop to go to the dentist’s. It’s almost done, though. 🙂

  4. Buffie

Hey girl! Yep, the kidos are on spring break this week and are already driving me CRAZY!!!! Seems there is never anything for them to do at home. But they are off to grandparents tomorrow and Wednesday and then a play date on Thursday. Hopefully a small portion of my sanity will return fairly soon! 🙂

I am already lovin’ your description of Thorin’s book. Just like everyone else, I can’t wait to read each of the stories. These knights have just captured my heart.

I’m looking forward to seeing Gilles dance tonight on Dancing with the Stars. Hope it is a hawt dance!!

  5. Karin

LaD, how fun to have the kid and grand kids for a sleep over. 🙂 I’m really happy you are jammin’ on your current wip. so when will you type the end?

Happy reading, Brandy! I’m doing a little of that myself! Sort of.

Edie, thnx on the title love. i hope since it’s thorin’s story and he’s a viking and all, we’ll get some cover love. yanno, some long blond hair to go with his big pecs and sword. 😉

Buffie, at least you’ll have a couple of kidless days to interrupt the insanity. I think Thorin’s book is going to push the series to the next level. I’m really rally excited about this one.

I can’t wait so see Gilles dance too.

  6. Jamie

I like the title Master of Deception. Thorin’s story sounds fun.
It always seems the more I need to focus on one WIP that another or several others will suddenly demand attention as well.

  7. Billi Jean

Well, when I have one of those stories in my head where it just needs to be written…I try to sneak in time — even until 4 am – snacks, music, computer and I stay up — unfortunately even so well armed, I often have to try and sleep, spend time on work, family and life — then I just go slightly crazy. LOL.
I feel your pain with the characters arguing in your head — I have a series I’m working on and the secondary characters in the first book want their story written — but they are way down the line — in my opinion. They seemed to think differently and I finally gave in — almost finished it in a week! So, they might have had a point! LOL — Love your work, can’t wait for more Karin! best, billi jean

  8. Margaret

    I’m waiting. . . (toe tapping)
So when do I get to read the first chapter of MOD? Hmm?
Our spring break was weeks ago. So munchkin is in school and you’d think I would get something done, but no, I’m reading Janette Kenny’s One REAl Man.

  9. Elisabeth Naughton

Our spring break was 2 weeks ago (when the weather was very un-spring-like). Can I just say…SOOO happy school is back in session!

Karin, the new medievel sounds fabulous. I’ve loved the others so far. I just turned in a new adventure proposal to my agent as well and I’m waiting (and hoping) she likes it, too. And, like you, I’m finding it a little hard to let go of that one and work on the second paranormal in my new series (working title is Deceived). I left my characters in a very precarious spot at the end of chapter three and they aren’t quite so happy. (Lots of grumbling coming from the back of my brain when I’m trying to focus on the new para….makes for a not-so-productive writer.)

Ah, the multiple personality world we live in…

  10. Elisabeth Naughton

And oh, yeah. I forgot to add…

I can’t wait for the new season of Rescue Me! I love me some Denis Leary. Just when I think his poor character can’t get into any more trouble, he proves me wrong.

He’s also a phenomenal writer. I read an article he wrote about how he met his wife (he was teaching college and she was one of his students). One of the best things I’ve read in a long time.

  11. J. Carson Black

Karin, whenever writing gets tough, I love the pick-me-up I get from you. You are so optimistic, excited, and forward-looking. And I can relate entirely. I LOVE my book. And yet, as much as I love my book in its final stages, I’m champing on the bit for the next one. it’s like those settlers driving wagon trains across the plains, always looking to that next set of mountains.

Thanks, Karin, for the reminder–even when I’m frustrated, I come over here and remember why I love this crazy, crazy biz. It’s crazy, but it’s joyful, too. It’s all what you make of it.

  12. kh

work any nam e yet soon to be grandma

  13. Charlotte Featherstone

Oooh, Thorin’s next! Awesome! Fingers crossed that your agent is gonna love your proposal and so are the editors!! I love your writing and want more books to buy!

I’m writing two books right now. I have two ST’s due June 1. So, I’m writing Sinful (Lord Wallingford’s book)which is an erotic historical, and Velvet Haven which is an erotic paranormal for NAL under the Sophie Renwick. The paranormal hero is a Night Sidhe shapeshifter, and that series has a Druid/Gothic theme to it as well as an overarching quest.

So, both heroes are so different, that I’m feeling refreshed switching between projects. But talk to me next month when I’ll be totally insane! lol!

  14. B.E. Sanderson

No Spring Break here. The superintendent/principal/teacher is a witch. ;o)

I can’t wait to read Thorin’s story. I think of all the knights, he’s my favorite. And now you’ve given me enough of a glimpse of his book that I’m drooling.

I’m working on writing a new suspense novel. So far this month I’ve really been cranking out the words, so life is good. =o)

  15. Karin

Thanx, Jaime, the title is growing on me, and it is apropos to the story.

Billie Jean, I think I’m going to have to find a way to write two stories at the same time. Maybe alternate days? I really wish I could exist on 4 hours of sleep a night. I’d get soooo much done!

Margaret, I had to put Deception aside to write the short story!

Eli, yay! Spring break is over for you! and you survived! Did the kids? How do you like your proposal? Paranormal? Did you sell the series? Deets woman, deets!

  16. Karin

Hey, I can’t wait for RM either! I love Denis Leary. He is still married to the same wife. 20+years.

Hey, Jake, where have you been hiding? Writing? Yes? Jake, I’m glad we’re in this craziness together. It sure makes the rough spots manageable.

KH, I think I’m going to go with Gigi. Hubby is Pappy, so Pappy and Gigi. Nice ring yes?

Charlotte, yep, Thorin is next. Love your titles! Do you have release dates?

Beth, that witch should be given a medal. No spring break=parents keep their sanity! So, your RS, how far along are you?

  17. Elisabeth Naughton

Thanks for asking, Karin. Yes, the para sold. First book releases May 2010, with the second to follow a few months later (though I don’t have a set release date for that one yet). I’m pretty excited because my pub is making it a lead title. They’re very excited about the new series. 2nd book isn’t due until 12/1, which explains why I’ve been taking my time on it. Gotta get cracking, though!

I do love the new RS proposal I turned in to my agent. It’s a real Indiana Jones meets James Bond kinda thing. I’m crossing fingers my agent likes it as well.

  18. B.E. Sanderson

Yeah, but she’s home all day every day. Sometimes I wonder if my sanity’s all that safe.

The new book is only about 11K words in, but it’s feeling good right now. I don’t know if there’ll be enough romance in it to make it more than suspense, but we’ll see what happens.

  19. Charlotte Featherstone

Hey Karin, thanks for asking! Sinful comes out with Harlequin Spice in May 2010, and Velvet Haven (under Sophie Renwick) comes out March 2010, but you’ll get a glimpse of the Annwyn world in a novella that I have coming out in an A Highlander Christmas anthology Nov 09. Phew…insane wait times when you’re busting yout butt for deadlines! lol!

  20. kh

    cool thanks

  21. Karin

Elizabeth? Where was I when you sold your para series? Congrats, and a lead title! Excellent!

Beth, good luck with the kidlet, and mucho good luck turning those 11K words into a completed novel.

Charlotte, so much to write so few hours in the day. Not sure how you do it working full time on top of it!!
