    Hi Karin!

Code 5150 is when cops are dealing with someone crazy. They have to confine them (against their will)if they pose a danger to themselves and/or to others.

  3. Jane

    Happy Release Day, Karin.

Code 5150 refers to someone who is crazy.

    Congrats to the winners.

  4. Erika

I had no idea, so I had to look it up:

Section 5150 is a section of the California Welfare and Institutions Code (specifically, the Lanterman-Petris-Short Act or “LPS”) which allows a qualified officer or clinician to involuntarily confine a person deemed to have a mental disorder that makes them a danger to him or her self, and/or others and/or gravely disabled. A qualified officer, which includes any California peace officer, as well as any specifically designated county clinician, can request the confinement after signing a written declaration. When used as a term, 5150 (pronounced “fifty-one-fifty”) can informally refer to the person being confined or to the declaration itself.

erika, i just went back and added it to the post. It was there yesterday but you made me realize I need to remind everyone each day so you don’t go 5150 looking for the answer!

  7. Cheryl McInnis

Well, damn, now I know what the cops were talking about. Me, crazy?? I don’t think so. Is it my fault that Thorin found himself locked in my basement and I had to ‘tend’ to him three times a day. I might have had to threaten him a time or two, but it wss for his own good. Just because I threatened to take his good eye away doesn’t make me 5150.
Isn’t it amazing how that Viking will turn on the charm . . . and the ‘talent’. Yeah, he has some sweet tasting . . . ‘talent’.

  9. J. Carson Black
